Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Date of birth: 4 March 2008
Regular handler: Angie Thornton
Background: Like all Cavaliers Miya is very friendly and wants to say 'hello' to all we meet, whether they have two legs or four! She passed her assessment in October 2008. She's so keen to do visits; it's difficult to get into the car without her whenever I'm wearing my uniform.
Fun Fact: She's still learning tricks, but she loves to be cuddled
Date of Birth: June 2010
Regular Handler: Alta Rossouw
Background: Maja has been with us since 2 months old. When she was 9 months old, our family survived a bad home invasion - lots of blood and noise. Maja became a shy, insecure dog. After training courses and lots of love from her family and support from her 'new' boisterous and brave sister, she overcame this - she’s 100% dog again. We were all proud of her when she passed her Top Dog assessment and probation period in March 2015. She enjoys her 'work' and is able to grasp a situation and to do the 'right' thing.
Fun Fact: Maja loves swimming and has excellent hearing; she never misses a boiling kettle, or the beep of the microwave!
Breed: Mix breed
Date of Birth: December 2011
Regular Handler: Michelle Shackleford
Background: Molly was found when she was approximately 9 months old, thin and neglected nursing 4 puppies. I was fostering her and her puppies until the puppies could be homed and Molly was strong enough to be sterilised and rehomed. I fell in love with Molly and she became a permanent member to the family!
Fun Fact: Molly is the sweetest dog but can be a goof too! She loves going on car rides!
Breed: Golden Retriever
Date of Birth: 25 February 2013
Regular Handler: Pat Schneider
Background: Myles is not the best dog for Retrieving but he gets full marks for personality. He loves attention and enjoys showing his swimming skills off to everyone. He is very obedient especially at meal times and cant wait to attack his food bowl.
Fun Fact: He is a very active dog but likes nothing better than sitting next to my chair in the evening to watch some TV.
Date of Adoption: March 2014, think her birthday is around November 2013
Regular Handler: Chrissie Smit
Background: Maisie was abandoned at my Vet. I went to drop something off there one morning and they twisted my very rubber arm to take her home with me.
Fun Fact: Maise LOVES to swim - funny that - and entertains herself the whole day by rolling her ball into the pool and jumping in like a super hero to fetch it. She also loves cuddling with her older brother (White Swiss Shepherd, 12) & Sisters (Lab, 12 & Lab, 11). She has bought new life to the old pups.
Date of Birth: 25 April 2011
Regular Handler: Janine B West-Evans
Background: We rescued Nukka from a ‘supposedly’ reputable breeder at 7 weeks in terrible condition - she had distemper and was trampled on at birth. After much care and medication she started to come right. We only started socializing her at 6 months. She still has many side effects from the disease, but her compassion and temperament make her perfect.
Fun Fact: Nukka will not eat raw or processed meats and prefers all fruit and vegetables. She has veggie soup every day and her best friends are 2 kittens, and she still sleeps with something in her mouth.
Date of Birth: +- January 2009
Regular Handler: Adele Thompson
Background: I adopted Mienkie October 2009 from our local SPCA. She was a skinny, scared young dog when I got her. Mienkie passed her evaluation November 2015, and qualified as a therapy dog January 2016. Mienkie love all people, and adores children.
Fun Fact: Mienkie is a mommy’s girl and follow me like a shadow.
Breed: Parsons Russell Terrier
Date of birth: 27 April 2009
Regular Handler: Valerie Riekert
Background: Xicci and Nikita (sisters) have enriched our lives ever since we brought them home as puppies in 2009. Kida, as we call her, has energy to spare and will most always act before she thinks, which makes her a treasure in training.
Fun Fact: She has starred in several advertisement videos and found being a TOP Dog a bit discouraging in the beginning as she was used to everybody in the cast coming to her - the roles reversed now and she is reaching out to others, children and the elderly alike.
Breed: Cross Terrier
Date of Birth: -+ 2009 (SPCA rescue)
Regular Handler: Fiona Martin
Background: Milo was rescued from the Benoni SPCA. He was first adopted by my dear friend Sue, and when she moved to the USA he came to live with us. Milo is a happy little sole who just loves being loved, he thinks everyone is his best friend. His little tail just does not stop wagging and he gets so excited when he get his Top Dog jacket on as he just loves the visits.
Fun Fact: Milo had not been near cats until he came to us. Now he is best friends with the two cats Henry and George and often sleeps with them in their bed during the day. He loves chasing the Hadedas around the property.
Breed: Labrador Retriever
Date of Birth: 10 December 2010
Regular Handler: Janice van Es
Background: Ollie is the first Top Dogs "Dog of the Month" (May 2016). He also holds the KUSA Bronze, Silver and Gold awards as a Canine Good Citizen. An enthusiastic therapy dog - once the TD uniform is on he never leaves my side in the house, and can't get in the car quickly enough!
Fun Fact: Ollie plays a mean game of Rugby daily, and has us running all over the grass with him. A keen 'fine weather' swimmer. He is a precious, adorable, well loved member of our family.
Breed: Black Spaniel
Date of Birth: March 2011
Regular Handler: Karen Poole
Background: Ollie is our guardian angel and takes his job as guardian very seriously, patrolling the house and garden regularly. He is a typical Spaniel - eats anything in sight, demands constant attention, and absolutely loves water. His tail never stops wagging at Top Dog visits and he loves all the attention from both kids and adults.
Fun Fact: Ollie is impossible to photograph! Not only is he a black blob in photos but he never sits still, so in addition to being a black blob he is a blurry black blob! One day we will have a professional photo taken so that we can show people how beautiful he is!
Date of Birth: 14 December 2015
Breed: Pavement special/ resembles border collie mix
Regular Handler: Angelique Renniers
Background: Ouzo was a rescue from Kitty and Puppy Haven at 4.5 months.
Fun Fact: Ouzo loves children and other animals and thinks they are all friendly. Our two cats are his best buddies and swimming his biggest hobby.
Date of birth: 25 April 2009
Regular Handler: Pam Green
Background: Pepper has been with our family since she was 10 weeks old. She is a “people dog” and is at her happiest when with people and being petted. She is very relaxed and will do anything for a treat. She is very patient with her beagle sister who treats her as a chew toy.
Fun Fact: Pepper loves to swim and does a few laps in the pool every day - even in winter.
Breed: Weimaraner (Blue)
Date of Birth: June 2011
Regular Handler: Rina Steenkamp
Background: Pixel was rescued from a loveless home by my friend in August 2013. Since she had been re-homed, she has blossomed into a happy, gentle and caring dog, who has taken to therapy like a duck to water. She is a very relaxed dog, who goes to sleep the minute the car wheels start rolling. She shares her home with her “sister”, Maja, also a Weimaraner and a therapy dog.
Fun Fact: Pixel has become quite the celebrity thanks to the four running shoes she wears on certain visits, due to the slippery floors of some of the institutions.
Breed: Yorkshire Terrier
Date of Birth: 1 April 2009
Regular Handler: Bev Smith
Background: For the first seven years of her life, Pudding belonged to very close friends but we were their official “Doggie Sitters” and she spent a huge amount of time with us. When ill health overtook our friends two/three years ago, she came to live with us permanently.
Fun Fact: She loves her morning walks and uses this time to chase Hadedas in her path. We spend a large amount of time at our beach house in KzN and chasing crabs on the rocks and digging madly in the loose beach sand is even more fun than chasing Hadedas in Gauteng.
