Name: Rex
Breed:
One of Gods special breeds
Date of Birth:
November 2007
Regular Handler:
Gaye Williams
Background:
My sister found Rex in the bush near her home, he was tiny, but had a big voice, and if she had not heard him crying as she walked to work that morning she would never have known such a wonderful companion. Today, he is a healthy, very talkative and loving boy. He is bright, clever, and gentle, would not harm a flea and is loved madly. Due to circumstances, my sister moved into a flat and was not allowed to take Rex with her, and I moved to Pretoria. This is when I became Rex’s new “Mom” and found Top Dogs
Fun Fact: Rex is our little miracle
Name: Rebecca (Becca)
Breed:
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Date of Birth: 22 September 2010
Regular Handler:
Angie Thornton
Background:
Rebecca was returned to her breeder, as her family were moving to a bigger house, which didn’t allow dogs. We found she’s deaf, but that didn’t stop her learning all the basic commands, with hand signals, in a very short time. She’s very calm and gentle, and is loving visits to both young and old.
Fun Fact: She is actually Thandi’s niece, and they have many similar family traits.
Name: Schatzi
Breed:
Golden Retriever
Date of Birth:
May 2012
Regular Handler:
Joanne Pretorius
Background:
We acquired Schatzi when we returned from a holiday in Germany and saw so many Goldies there. Schatzi attended Puppy School where she excelled. She loves everybody and all other dogs, is the social butterfly at the park where I walk her and she shares her home with Oscar the maltese and two cats. She loves to go to the sea where she body surfs and loses stacks of balls in the sea!
Fun Fact: She just loves to play on the top step of our pool where she is kept busy for hours playing with the leaves etc on the floor of the pool.  Sometimes she is so engrossed she does not even want her supper!
Name: Skriffels
Breed: D
achshund cross
Adopted:
as an adult from FORA in April 2007, She’s +/- 10 years
Regular Handler: Louise Bezuidenhout
Background:
Skriffeltjie was a scared and timid lady when she 1st arrived in our home. She cowered when you loosened your belt and spent most of her days under a blanket. After much TLC she blossomed into the most loving dog. She is confident to meet new people, and has a special fondness for smaller children.
Fun fact: she is a very successful hunter of rodents and birds, and her second favourite pastime is taking naps on a pillow under the spare bed.
Name: Sansa
Breed:
Mixed (apparently there is no terrier!)
Adopted:
Born July 2013, adopted December 2013
Regular Handler:
Claire Mac Intosh
Background:
Sansa was originally adopted from Ark Animal Centre in 2013 by a close friend but ended up growing too big and became too boisterous to live in a complex. I then adopted her and brought her to live on our farm where she happily runs circles around the horses all day, swims in the river and generally causes nonsense with my other dogs. She started with general obedience classes and proved to be a very quick learner. She now has a couple of obedience certificates to her name!
Fun Fact:
Her one ear is always up and the other is always down!
Name: Sophie
Breed:
JRT we think
Date of Birth:
approx 29 January 2013
Regular Handler:
Lorraine Tee
Background:
Sophie was found on the streets in January 2013, when she was about 6 weeks old - we adopted her and have never looked back. She has done Bronze, Silver and Gold CGC - she loves everyone and every dog.  She has just adopted her own baby - a little Maltese that was dumped in Orange Grove and has had 4 homes in his short 14 weeks of life.  She absolutely loves him and is a really good senior dog!!
Fun Fact: Has 5 minutes of madness every morning after doing a 4 km walk!! Runs around the house as if she has not had enough exercise!!!
Name: Skye
Breed:
Date of birth:
7 November 2015
Regular Handler:
Tessa Hanekom
Background:
Adopted (from Ark) on 30 January 2016. She was supposed to be a "proper" dalmatian, but when she stopped growing I had her dna tested, to discover she is crossed with a bit of Boston Terrier.
Fun fact: She has one doggie brother and four kittie siblings. She stole one of the "kitty cave" beds as a puppy and still sleeps in it every night.
Name: Ranger
Breed:
Border collie cross
Adopted:
October 2015 at approx 18 months old
Regular Handler:
Jenny Juzi
Background:
Ranger was adopted from Border Collie Rescue after being brought in as a stray. He lives with two other dogs, a cat and several chickens.  He has completed some basic obedience training and has recently started Dog Agility.
Fun Fact:
Ranger is a bit of a thief. He will quietly pick up anything he can reach, from the TV remote to my handbag, and make himself a little stash on the lawn.
Name: Shiloh
Breed:
Chocolate Labrador
Date of Birth:
16 June 2013
Regular Handler:
Belinda Lamb
Background:
As a puppy I started off life by being donated to the SA Guide Dogs but that did not work out so at the age of 18 months, in 2014 I was adopted by Belinda who is my friend and handler.
Fun Fact:
My favourite hobbies are of course eating anything that comes my way and relaxing at home either on the sofa or perhaps in the garden. I love my daily walks in the park and especially chasing my tennis ball, swimming and playing with my friends. I joined the Top Dog team in 2015 and my visits are the highlight of my week.
Name: Tommy
Breed:
Golden Cocker Spaniel
Adopted:
May 2013 - estimate 14 years old (2017)
Regular Handler:
Mark Theron
Background:
Tommy was adopted from the SPCA and is the most loving old man - always ready to give a morning hug, and the puppy in him comes out when he goes for his daily walk in the park.  He tolerates the 2 cats, and gets on very well with the other 2 dogs.  Ollie is his Top Dogs partner in crime.  They love their Top Dogs outings.
Fun Fact: When Tommy is on the bed or couch he hates being touched by the cats or dogs and actually moans!  He guards the oven when Mark makes dinner and is always ready for an “accidental drop”.
Name: Tessa
Breed:
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Adopted:
2 August 2014 - middle aged
Regular Handler: Angie Thornton
Background:
Tessa was very overweight (about 30% of her body weight), which is how she got her name "2 ton Tess". The shelter thought she was old, deaf and blind, but she was just 'closed down', and blossomed as soon as she became part of a family again. She fitted in as soon as she arrived, and reached her target weight in less than 6 months. She’s still quite an accomplished food thief, so we have to be very careful not to leave anything where she can reach it.
Fun Fact:
She’s cleared everything off one side of the hearth, and claimed it to lie on the tiles!
Name: Tessie
Breed:
Bernese Mountain Dog
Date of Birth:
25 April 2011
Regular Handler:
Sue Billett
Background: We got Tessie from a breeder in Benoni, both her parents were imported - her mother from Spain and her father from Belgium. Tessie is 5 years old and she is the most affectionate, gentle, intelligent, and loyal dog I have ever owned.
Fun Facts: True to her breed,Tessie loves lying out on the lawn on the coldest of winter days looking over the valley and sniffing the wind - she even does this when it is raining!  However, conversely, she will lie across my daughter’s knee in front of the fire until her coat is burning hot and we have to tell her to move away!
Name: Thandi
Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Date of birth: 11 May 2006
Regular handler: Angie Thornton
Background: We were on the waiting list for 2 years before we got Thandi as a puppy. She started Therapy puppy visits at 11 weeks old, and just loved going to new places and meeting new people. She passed her assessment in January 2007, aged 8 months. She loves all types of visits.
Fun Fact: She's a real character and likes to 'talk' and 'sing' to those we visit
